One of the most common questions I get from expectant mommas planning maternity photos as a Phoenix, Arizona maternity photographer is: “When should I book my maternity photos?”
But the real answer is that it’s not just about timing, it’s about understanding what kind of maternity session you actually want.
Maternity photography isn’t one-size-fits-all. There are so many more options than most moms realize, and once you understand them, planning your session with a Phoenix, Arizona maternity photographer becomes much easier and a lot less overwhelming.
Arizona Pregnancy Announcement Sessions (Your First Chapter)
Pregnancy announcement sessions usually happen around 3 to 4 months into your pregnancy, when you’re ready to share your news. I’ve done everything from green open field farm sessions in Gilbert, to studio setups with styled newspapers and baby announcements, to surprise sessions that include dogs, grandparents, and full family surprises I didn’t even know were happening until I arrived.
One of my favorite examples was a pregnancy announcement for a mom who is expecting twins again (she already had twins, so she's about to have four kids total!) Based on her inspo, she wanted something very natural, green, and with open field vibes. So I suggested one of my favorite locations, a farm style home in Gilbert. We’re talking green open space, a large modern farm house, citrus trees, chickens and a turkey walking around, and a little swing set tucked into the trees It was a 30-minute session with her, her husband, and their kids, and we incorporated tiny baby onesies and sonogram prints into the shoot. It felt personal, but still really customized for their life in that exact moment.
Then I’ve also had completely different announcement sessions, like a styled studio shoot where I was told “it’s just maternity,” and I showed up to find out there were four people… plus two dogs. The couple did not give me a warning about the grandparents and their pups joining, but it worked perfectly! The family had coordinated bandanas for the dogs that said “little brother” and “little sister" on them, plus newspapers and announcement props laid out in a really aesthetic way for an aesthetic editorial style session.
I’ve also done announcement videos at Lost Dutchman State Park where the couple wanted that wide desert landscape, golden light, and mountains. Videos tend to lean more emotional and storytelling-focused, especially since clients will want to share them online. Every announcement ends up looking completely different because it’s built around your version of the story, not a template.
Gender reveals (Where The Reality Starts Setting In)
As much as I love photography, I am always impartial to videography as an Arizona videographer as well. Gender reveals are where video can really shine. These are usually done once you know the baby’s gender and want to share it in a meaningful way, whether that’s something cinematic in the desert, a styled studio setup, or something intimate with just your closest family. Either way, it’s about capturing that exact moment everything becomes real. And when done right, it naturally connects into maternity photo poses, family reactions, and storytelling you’ll never want to forget. Arizona Maternity Sessions
(The Part Everyone Thinks About First)
A maternity session showing off the baby bump is what most people think of when they search for an Arizona maternity photographer, but even this has layers. You can do solo maternity portraits, couple-focused sessions, or maternity sessions that include your kids. Involving kiddos is one of my favorites because they're part of the journey too!
This is where we focus on maternity photo poses, but not in a stiff or overly structured way. It’s about movement, emotion, and storytelling. And you don’t have to know what you’re doing at all! I guide everything, from hand placement to those in-between moments like when your partner is cradling your belly protectively without even thinking about it.
When Should You Actually Take Maternity Photos in Arizona?
I usually recommend maternity sessions to be typically shot between 7 to 8 months of pregnancy, so you can start to book even at the 5 or 6 month mark! At the 7-8 month stage, you usually have that beautiful, round belly while still feeling comfortable enough to move, walk, and actually enjoy your session. By 9 months, things can get uncomfortable for the momma and unpredictable, especially in Arizona heat.
As a Phoenix, Arizona maternity photographer, I always recommend booking earlier than you think you need to, not just for availability, but so we have time to plan everything with intention: outfits, location, timing, and the full creative direction of your session. And if your due date lands during Arizona summer months, I often recommend considering a studio session! I know... I know! Most of us like that golden hour sunset look outdoors, but because comfort and safety always come first, especially in later pregnancy stages, a studio session should be considered. This is also a big reason people searching “when are maternity photos usually taken” end up realizing timing matters more than they thought.
Arizona Baby Shower Photography & Videography
(The Milestone Most Moms Forget to Document)
Another part of maternity that a lot of moms don’t think about is baby shower photography and videography. This is one of those in-between milestones that feels small at the time, but ends up being incredibly meaningful once the baby is here.
Baby showers usually happen anywhere from the 5 to 8 month mark, depending on family schedules and planning timelines. And while they’re often seen as just an event, they’re actually one of the most emotional parts of the entire pregnancy journey. You’ve moved past the announcement stage, you’re deep into preparing for baby, and you’re surrounded by your support system.
As a Phoenix, Arizona maternity photographer, I document these moments in a way that feels natural. Like a fly on the wall. This can include candid guest reactions, detail shots of decor, styled tables, gift openings, and video coverage of speeches or surprise moments. The same storytelling approach that I use in maternity sessions applies here too, it’s about presence over perfection.
What I love most about including baby shower photography or videography in your maternity journey is how it connects everything together. You’re not just documenting one session, you’re building a full timeline of your pregnancy story, from announcement, to celebration, to maternity portraits, and eventually newborn moments.
Arizona Newborn + Fresh 48 Sessions
(What Most Moms Don’t Plan Ahead For or Don't Know About)
I've encountered many moms who don’t realize newborn and fresh 48 sessions are part of maternity planning too! Fresh 48 sessions are like they sound, they happen within 48 hours of birth, usually in the hospital, capturing those first emotional, raw, real moments with your "fresh" baby.
If not a fresh 48, newborn sessions are typically done within 1 to 2 weeks and can be at home or in studio while baby is still in that sleepy, curled-up baby scrunch stage. After 3 to 4 weeks, things naturally shift away from that “newborn” feel, which is why timing matters so much with these. That why is these should be scheduled early. So if you haven't started your “maternity and newborn photography near me” search, this is you sign to consider it.
Final Thoughts on Booking Maternity Photos in Arizona
Ultimately, when should maternity photos be taken? Well, it’s more than just choosing a date on the calendar. It’s about understanding which moments you want to preserve, from the first announcement, to your maternity session, your baby shower, and those first newborn days. Every family’s story looks different, which is why your photos should feel personal to you. As a Phoenix, Arizona maternity photographer, my goal is to make that process feel simple and completely customized so you can focus less on the stress and more on actually enjoying this season of your life.
