Outfit stress is one of the most common challenges I see with my photography clients in Phoenix, Arizona. Whether it’s a family session, engagement photos, or any photoshoot, thinking about what to wear can feel overwhelming. Between coordinating everyone’s schedules, checking Pinterest for inspiration, and worrying that your outfits “don’t match,” it’s easy to get stuck. But it doesn’t have to be complicated. Pinterest can be helpful, but it can also overwhelm you. Don't get me wrong! I get my inspo from Pinterest as much as the next person, but it still can be too much. Many clients assume you need everyone in matching colors or themed pajamas (i.e. family pj Christmas sessions). That’s not the case! I help clients by reviewing their outfits and suggesting color palettes and combinations based on the location and lighting. For example, for a Seattle engagement session, I guided a couple on how to coordinate outfits so that everything looked connected across two different looks while staying true to the scenery. I made a style guide with outfit color palettes that they could both use as reference for the locations we were planning to shoot at.
His first outfit was dark blue jeans, a brown-gray sweater, and Timbs, while she paired little brown boots with a long pink skirt and a white top with her. The boots on both created a subtle connection. For their second look, he added a jacket that matched the color of his Timbs, and she changed into light blue jeans, and layered a dark olive green top with a light brown crop jacket, still keeping her boots consistent. By planning these outfits carefully, we ensured the colors complemented the forest and beach backgrounds AND connected to each others outfits without feeling overly coordinated or staged. And the photos came out beautifully balanced, playful, and cohesive across the entire session!!
