Helping couples plan a surprise proposal is always exciting, but this one was extra special, and a little hectic! I was brought on as an associate photographer to help capture a last-minute proposal for a family visiting from Connecticut. The groom-to-be, his soon to be fiancée, and their entire family were vacationing at a luxury Scottsdale resort, which offered the perfect combination of privacy, iconic desert scenery, and Spanish-inspired architecture.

The groom-to-be’s sister coordinated most of the details for him, and I jumped in to help organize everything. Since they were out-of-state, I made sure the timing, location, and camera angles were seamless so the proposal could unfold naturally all while keeping the moment a surprise.

As they approached a hidden scenic spot on the resort grounds, I waited out of sight, camera ready. When he dropped to one knee, her reaction was priceless, and the family was there to witness it. The resort’s red-stone accents, sunlit terraces, and desert landscaping provided endless options for both proposal photos and Arizona engagement session images, giving a Tlaquepaque / Sedona vibe right in Scottsdale.

After the proposal, we took full advantage of the resort grounds for their desert engagement photos, capturing romantic portraits, playful moments, and candid family interactions. Even small personal gestures, like their little “I love you” signs to each other, made the session feel intimate and meaningful.

What I loved most about this session was how planning, location, and personal touches came together. Out-of-state couples often have tight schedules, and I pride myself on helping coordinate every step, from scouting locations and timing the perfect light to incorporating family and capturing memories that last a lifetime.
